Traditional English Cottage Garden Design in West Sussex
The Garden Design Project – An Overview
The property: This Sussex property was a stunning period barn that had recently undergone a complete renovation throughout.
The conceptual brief: Following the comprehensive property renovation our clients were hoping to complete their project with a quintessential English cottage garden – an outdoor area that would seamlessly merge with its surrounding rural landscape.
The Garden Design Project – In Detail
The area with which we had to work was relatively expansive – providing for an excellent base, although one with many areas to consider in terms of planting and grasses. The classic vision that our clients had for their garden provided us with a massive selection of traditional English flowers, shrubs, grasses and plants. Amongst these we were tasked with choosing a selection that would offer colour for the longest period of the year.
Project Approach and Traditional English Garden Design Solution
The English garden planting design included herbaceous perennials and lavender hidcote which formed the border edging. We also selected early and late flowering perennials to provide for splashes of colour throughout the space that spanned from early spring until autumn.
Given the brief, and the wish for a traditional English garden, we also created a wildflower meadow, which was seeded using selected wildflower seed based on soil testing to ensure maximum coverage.
