Classic Garden Design – Wadhurst, East Sussex.
The Garden Design Project – An Overview
The property: The client’s property was a beautiful old converted granary – with traditional design features and a classic period air, this property sat rather uncomfortably amongst hard, contemporary landscaping.
The conceptual brief:
Given the awkward contrast between home and garden, our client wanted an outdoor space that was soft and which would complement the period property – reflecting and enhancing the building’s age and character. Our client also requested an afternoon seating area that would be separated from the main garden area.
The Garden Design Project – In Detail
Transitioning from contemporary to classic garden design demanded significant removal of existing structures and a complete re-design of the garden landscape. Plants, shrubs and flowers would also need careful consideration so we could create a suitable classic garden.
Project Approach and Classic Garden Design Solution
We began by removing the old driveway and retaining walls which featured at the front of the house, and replaced them with soft perennial beds. This introduced colour that would transition from February right through to October, achieved by using a combination of bulbs, evergreen shrubs and a wide range of perennial plants.
Enclosed from the remaining garden, we created a ‘secret garden’, allowing for late afternoon seating.
At the side of the house we designed a herb garden and mini orchard – two wonderfully sympathetic features for a property of this type. The boundary walls were especially ideal for pleached fruit trees, whilst we then split the garden landscape into four separate sections which were each bordered by box balls featuring massed planting areas of thyme, rosemary and other mixed herbs.
